Your AC Summer Readiness Checklist for Central Valley Homes

Dirk & Sons

Why summer prep matters in the Central Valley

Out here, summer doesn't ease in — it arrives hard, and your air conditioner goes from resting to running almost nonstop overnight. A little prep now keeps your system efficient, heads off the breakdowns that always seem to land on the hottest day, and can lower your energy bills all season.

Here's a simple checklist any homeowner can run through, plus the points where it's worth bringing in a pro.

The DIY checklist

Replace your air filter. A clogged filter chokes airflow, strains the system, and dirties your indoor air. Swap it (or clean it, if it's reusable), then check it monthly through the summer.

Clear around the outdoor unit. Pull weeds, trim back plants, and clear away leaves and debris so there's a couple of feet of breathing room on every side — your condenser needs airflow to dump heat.

Gently rinse the outdoor coils. With the power off, use a garden hose (never a pressure washer) to rinse dust and cottonwood off the fins. Be gentle; they bend easily.

Check your vents and registers. Make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs so air can actually circulate.

Test it early. Don't wait for the first 105-degree afternoon. Run a cooling cycle now and confirm it's blowing cold, cooling steadily, and not making any new noises.

Set your thermostat. Program a schedule (or a smart thermostat) so you're not cooling an empty house — an easy way to trim the bill.

When to call a pro

Some things are best left to a technician. Reach out if you notice:

  • Warm or weak air even while it's running
  • Strange noises, smells, or short cycling (turning on and off rapidly)
  • A jump in your energy bill with no change in how you use it
  • It's been more than a year since your last professional tune-up

A professional tune-up goes deeper than the DIY list — checking refrigerant, electrical connections, the capacitor, and the parts that fail most — so small issues get caught before they become a no-cool emergency.
